Hi, I’m Kayla

I’m a queer New Orleans-based journalist and project manager, with a passion for telling stories and building teams.

My Work

Journalism

I’ve edited projects, led teams and built newsrooms from scratch. At CNHI, I edited a variety of stories with national impact, including coverage of the heroin crisis, a Kentucky clerk’s refusal to certify gay marriages and the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march. As a reporter, my investigative stories brought clean water to a remote community and freed a man from jail. Check out more of my work.

Public Speaking

I’m an experienced public speaker and trainer. I’ve talked with Indiana journalists about building an online community, shared social media tips with Georgia reporters and presented on news website micropayments before the International News Media Association.

Accomplishments

I’m a proud graduate of Poynter Institute’s Academy for Women in Digital Media, and I’ve been named one of Editor & Publisher’s Top 25 under 35. While at CNHI, I co-managed and judged the annual Best of CNHI awards recognizing excellence among the company’s journalists at more than 100 locations across 22 states.

Get in touch

I’m available for consulting work, special projects and freelance writing and editing. I also enjoy coaching journalism students and women getting started in digital media.

If you’re looking for any of those things (or something else entirely!), let’s set up a meeting.
